The DoE, in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act, has established a defense waste processing plant facility at SRP and has selected borosilicate glass as a medium to immobilize the highly radioactive waste in glass capsules storing this immobilized waste till a permanent repository is built and available for the storage in the Yucca Mountains. This is a project of national significance and a Soft Source engineers had the opportunity to work on this project as a contractor and gain valuable experience in nuclear waste stabilization and disposal process. This innovative and technology driven project aims to render highly radioactive waste into inert and harmless glassified capsules, has gained significance due to the risks of such a huge quantity of nuclear waste stored at site which is affecting the underground soil strata and the water quality in the area.
